Actually, LightWave does use four digits when the number goes over 999,
and it will even use five digits when necessary.

Image sequences always work that way.  The reasons are that the program
doesn't know which frame you will render first, and also there's no
restriction that all images in a sequence be the same size or type.  For
example, you could have a sequence consisting of a 376 x 480 HAM image
followed by a 1024 x 768 24-bit Targa followed by a 256 x 256 8-bit
color-mapped image, and LightWave would be perfectly happy with that.
